Description
I vacillated on whether I should post this image or not. Watching the Circle of Life play out in the rawest form is very tough. While on a recent Snow Coach tour into the interior of Yellowstone, we came upon the Wapiti Lake Wolf Pack preying upon an injured bison.
I was with other photographers and we all knew that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be in close range to wolves.
I won't give a lot of details, but that bison was very tough. Most of the pack participated in wearing him down. As darkness was approaching the majority of the pack converged on the bison. In a very strategic move, the bison went into the water. That's when I got this shot. The wolves fearing hypothermia did not want to enter the river.
The bison did not win the war that day, but in a sense he won the battle because he died in the river that night.

What an amazing photo and story Julie. What a tough spot to be in. I guess she left this earth on her own terms, better than being eaten alive. It must have been so hard to watch, I don't think I could.

Great capture of nature being nature. It isn't always pretty. Great story to go along with the photo too. Very nice work all around.

Wonderful livestory capture. Good you choose to post this image. Hunters and prey are everyday business in wildlife and though it is tough it is like your title the circle of life (or lives) for animals. L/F
